The Importance of Lifelong Learning
The Importance of Lifelong Learning
Knowledge is the primary source of value in our world today. Our ability to expand our mind by constantly seeking of a lifelong learning is the key to personal success.
By dedicating ourselves to continuous learning, we can get ahead in every aspect of our life. All it takes is our commitment.
In my journey to life of Abundance, I’ve learned from various people the value of continuous learning. When you searched Lifelong learning, it is defined as “all learning activity undertaken throughout life, with the aim of improving knowledge, skills and competences within a personal, civic, social and/or employment-related perspective”.
Continuous learning gives us an edge to achieve our aims in life. It gives us a right perspective on various areas of our life that are necessary to our success.
So how can we really improve ourselves? Our skills and knowledge?
There are a lot of ways on how to continuously improved ourselves. You might know some of these already and I would like to share some of the things that I follow personally in my pursuit to personal excellence and continuous learning.
- Attend Seminars or Trainings – In our generation now, there are a lot of companies/organizations that offers trainings and seminars on specific topics that will suit to your training needs. If you want to improve your health, there are seminars about health. If you want to improve your finances, there are a lot of seminars about money management. If you want self development, there are seminars on motivation and personal development. The thing is, everything that you want to improve on, there are specifics trainings/seminars available to you, of course for a fee.
- Free videos on seminars/trainings via social media – Nowadays, information is just on a tip of our fingers seconds away from searching online. There are various social media platforms like facebook or youtube wherein we can watch from a guru/coach/consultant/entrepreneur, videos about health, wealth, self development, real estate, sales, marketing etc.. that can really make an impact on ourselves by learning from those who are already successful. We should take advantage of this advancement in technology and gets the necessary information needed to develop ourselves. But be cautious on what social media brings, for our attention might divert to topics that will distract our attention. Despite the free access of information nowadays, majority of people are stuck to entertainment and games.
- Read Books Continuously and Consistently – You can get ahead in life if you continuously feed your mind with healthy thoughts and this can be achieved through reading. You can read books on various areas that you think you need to improve on. If you want to improve your finances, there are thousand of books out there that you can read on. If you want topics about health, there are a lot of books out there on how to improve your health. Every topic that you want, are available at your nearest bookstore. The great thing about reading is that you connect well with the author especially if the author walk the talk. If the author writes based on his experience, especially his successes, then its like, you are learning from his experience, getting the tips from him. For the past two (2) years, I committed to read at least four (4) books a month that constantly feeds my mind.
- Learn from a Mentor – The best way to learn is from a person that is already living the dream that we wanted to be. You can call him a Coach, a Leader, a Mentor, Teacher or a Guru. In my opinion, you can have a mentor either online or offline. What do I mean by that? When I say online, you can have a mentor via social media like youtube. There are a lot of youtube channels out there by the most respective motivational/leadership guru that are sharing their views and insights on health, relationship, finances, self development etc. I personally subscribed for free to youtube channels about leadership, entrepreneurship, motivational, health, real estate etc.. When I say offline, you can have a mentor from the people you personally know. Maybe you have relatives that you admire the most and you can request him/her to be an apprentice.
As I read one of the books of Brian Tracy titled “Goals” I’ve come across with these twelve step program to personal excellence that we can apply and work on it continually until we have achieved our goal.
1.) Have a desire: In what one skill area would you life to be absolutely excellent?
2.) Believe: What action steps in personal development could you take right now to increase your belief and confidence that you can master the new skill?
3.) Write it down: Write down a clear, present tense statement describing yourself as you would look, feel, and behave as a result of mastering this key skill.
4.) Analyze your starting point: What are your areas of strength and weakness in this area currently?
5.) Determine why you want to excel in this area: Make a list of five positive things that would be different in your life as the result of becoming excellent in a particular skill.
6.) Set a deadline: Determine exactly when you will be excellent in this skill area, and set sub-deadlines for the steps you will take each day, week, and month.
7.) Identify the obstacles: Determine the obstacles that stand between you and the achievement of excellence, especially the obstacles within yourself.
8.) Determine the additional knowledge and skill you need: Identify the specific resources you will require, including books, audio programs, seminars, and the study schedule you will need to follow to master this new skill.
9.) Determine the people you’ll need: Whose help and cooperation will you require to master this skill?
10.) Make a plan: Create a list of everything that you can think of that you need to do to achieve excellence in this area.
11.) Visualize: See yourself in your mind’s eye, your “inner mirror”, as if you were already a recognized expert in this new area. Repeat this exercise over and over until the image is accepted by your subconscious mind as a command.
12.) Never give up: Once you have decided to develop this key skill, make a decision that you will never give up until you are recognized by others as very good in this area.
Just remember that Excellence is a Journey. There is an old saying: “Anything worth doing well is worth doing poorly at first.”
It is not practice that makes perfect; it is imperfect practice that eventually makes perfect.
Whenever we start something new, we can expect to do it poorly. We will feel clumsy and awkward at first. We will feel inadequate and inferior. We will often feel silly and embarrassed. But this is the price that we need to pay to achieve excellence on our chosen field. We will always have to pay the price of success, and that price often involves hard work of mastering a difficult skill that we need to move to the top of our field.
Practice, Practice, Practice
The more you practice what you are learning, the faster you will become competent and skilled in that area. The more you practice, the more confidence you will develop, the more rapidly you will overcome your feelings of inadequacy in that skill, and the faster you will master it.
